  1. Staking, Slashing & Chilling

Chilling

Chilling stops a validator or a nominator from any nominating or validating activity, and can be initiated by a validator or nominator at any time, taking effect at the start of the next era.

Chilling can be either voluntary or involuntary.

Voluntary Chilling

In voluntary chilling, the validator initiates the process. This means a validator decides to exit from being a validator. When voluntary, chilling will keep the validator active in the current session but will move them to the inactive set in the next session. The validator will not lose their nominators.

Involuntary Chilling

Involuntary chilling is used as a penalty (initiated involuntarily by the validator.) This means the nominator or validator are temporarily banned from validating and nominating. It also disables the validator for the remainder of the current era and disqualifies them from being on the candidate list in the subsequent NPoS cycle.
